If you sell a T-shirt in Sizes S, M, L, and XL, you are not stuck with a single minimum quantity for the whole product – you can set a completely different minimum for each individual size, color, or any other variation combination. #### Why store owners need this * A wholesale supplier wants every order to be at least 10 units, but a global setting is too rigid because some SKUs are sold in cases of 6 and others in cases of 24. * A clothing brand sells the same design in multiple sizes, and slow-moving sizes( like XS or XXL) need a higher minimum order quantity to justify production, while popular sizes (M, L) can be sold individually. * A store wants one simple rule everywhere („every order must be at least 3 items“) without editing every single product. QtyGuard covers all three of these use cases with three independent, layered levels of control. #### Three Levels of Minimum Quantity Control **1. Global Minimum Quantity (Store-Wide Default)** Set one minimum quantity that applies to every product in your store from a single settings screen (WooCommerce > Minimum Quantity). This is the fallback used whenever a more specific rule (product or variation) has not been set. Set it to 0 to disable the global rule entirely. **2. Product-Level Minimum Quantity** Every simple product (and every variable product as a whole) has its own „Minimum Quantity“ field on the Inventory tab of the Product Data panel. This overrides the global minimum for that specific product only. **3. Variation-Level Minimum Quantity (Size S / M / L, Color, etc.)** This is the feature that sets QtyGuard apart. Open the „Variations“ tab on any variable product, expand a variation (for example, Size = Large), and you will find a dedicated „Minimum Quantity“ field right next to the variation’s price. Set a different minimum for each Size, Color, Material, or any other attribute combination you use for variations. If left blank, that variation automatically falls back to the product-level minimum, and if that is blank too, it falls back to the global minimum. #### Example Imagine a variable „Cotton Socks“ product with three variations: * Size Small – Minimum Quantity: 5 (sold in packs of 5 because Small stock is limited) * Size Medium – Minimum Quantity: left blank (uses the product-level minimum of 2) * Size Large – Minimum Quantity: 1 (can be bought individually) A customer trying to buy 2 pairs of „Small“ will see: „Minimum quantity required is 5.“ A customer buying „Medium“ only needs to meet the product’s minimum of 2. A customer buying „Large“ can order just 1. #### Where the Minimum Quantity Is Enforced * **Add to Cart button** on the single product page (validated instantly, with a clear WooCommerce error notice). * **Cart page**, every time the cart is loaded or updated – so a customer cannot bypass the rule by adding items in multiple steps or editing cart quantities directly. * **Quantity input field**, which automatically starts at (and cannot go below) the correct minimum. Upload the plugin folder `qtyguard-minimum-quantity` to the `/wp-content/plugins/` directory, or install it directly through the WordPress Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin screen. 2. Activate the plugin through the ‚Plugins‘ menu in WordPress. 3. Make sure WooCommerce is installed and active (this plugin requires WooCommerce). 4. Go to **WooCommerce > Minimum Quantity** to set an optional store-wide global minimum quantity. 5. To set a minimum for a specific simple product: edit the product, open the **Inventory** tab, and fill in the „Minimum Quantity“ field. 6. To set a minimum for a specific variation: edit a variable product, open the ** Variations** tab, expand the variation you want to configure (e.g. Size: Large), and fill in the „Minimum Quantity“ field shown next to the price fields. 7. Leave any field blank/0 to fall back to the next level (variation falls back to product, product falls back to global). ## FAQ ### Does this support variable products and variations (Size, Color, etc.)? Yes. You can set a minimum quantity for each individual variation independently, in addition to product-level and store-wide minimums. ### What happens if I set a global minimum AND a product minimum AND a variation minimum? The most specific rule always wins. QtyGuard checks the variation minimum first; if it is not set, it checks the product minimum; if that is not set either, it falls back to the global minimum. ### I set a variation minimum but it’s not enforced – why? Make sure you entered a value greater than 0 in the Minimum Quantity field for that specific variation, and that the variation itself is saved (click „Save changes“ on the Variations tab). If a variation’s field is left blank, it will use the product or global minimum instead, which is expected behavior. ### Does this affect the Cart page too, or only Add to Cart? Both. Minimum quantity is enforced when adding to cart, and it is checked again on the Cart page so it can’t be bypassed by adjusting quantities afterward. ### Can I set the minimum quantity to different values for wholesale vs retail customers? Not out of the box – QtyGuard applies the same minimum to all customers/roles. Role- based or customer-specific rules are not currently supported. ### Does this work with variable subscriptions or bundled products? QtyGuard is built and tested for standard WooCommerce simple and variable products. Compatibility with subscription or bundle plugins is not guaranteed. ### Will this slow down my store? No. QtyGuard only runs a couple of lightweight meta lookups on the product pages, cart, and checkout – there is no impact on page load elsewhere in your store. ### Is this plugin translation-ready? The field now always appears next to the variation’s price fields, regardless of the stock management setting. * Improvement: Added an inline help tooltip explaining that a blank variation field falls back to the product/global minimum. * Fix: Variation „Minimum Quantity“ value was not being saved (and appeared empty again after saving) when using the „Save changes“ button inside the Variations tab. This button saves variations via a separate AJAX request that does not include the main product form’s nonce, so the incorrect nonce check on the variation save handler was removed. Saving via the main „Update“ button and via „Save changes“ in the Variations tab now both work correctly. * Fix: Quantity box could get „stuck“ at the highest minimum seen so far when switching between variations (e.g. selecting Small after Large kept showing Large’s higher minimum instead of updating to Small’s own minimum).
